Getting By

Sun Jun 22, 2008, 9:03 PM
Emotions of everything have been flooding me lately. Some I choose to write down, others I cannot fathom to write. Sometimes, in rare moments, I expose pieces of me that are frightening, but truly who i am. I've oft been noted a hopeless romantic, a psychotic madman, and worse...If nothing else, i may be afraid, but this helps me in some way i suppose. Maybe, i am hoping, that i will enjoy life, hopefully sooner than later. Life is eclectic, moods ever changing, but i cannot shake this feeling i need someone, nomatter how hard i try to be self sustained. i want to be by myself, i am a selfish person, yet im miserable without her...

Self deception...

Poetry, Prose, and the Woundrous In-Between

Tue May 6, 2008, 8:18 PM
Decent poetry is raw emotion, usually more that just prose, but not always;
and if the reader is lucky, perchance it rhymes.

Good poetry has a well defined purpose, and usually structure, even if that structure is hidden from many readers. Such elements as metre, rhythm, rhyming, and pace, help to concoct better poetry than the average poet can hope to immitate.

In my humble opinion, the best poetry you will ever be graced to read is the culmination and honing of many skills. Raw emotion focused into a singularity and expressed in word, like a prism that refracts light, is a great starting point. The actual fleshing out of thought. Expressing details in a way that captivates and sets a reader's imagination free...

Write, write, and write! However writing alone does not lead to great poetry, or poetry that will even be read by others. Vocabularize! Yeah, so i made that word up. Soak your mind with words, and the many ways to express ideas, and learn the subtle differences they convey. Choice in words is akin to painters having a variety of colours to choose from when creating their work. Words have so many shades and hues of meaning, the more you know, the closer your poetry can come to being as precise as you would like.

Grammar! If you would like to express yourself in a way most people can understand, grammar is vital. The better you become with grammar, the more options you have in your disposal. Grammar is like a sculptor's tools, the stronger, and better your grammar, the more you can create, and the more creative you can be.

Be different. Try to avoid trite and over-used phrases, unless there is a reason for them, like driving a point home. Originality can be one of the biggest obstacles many aspiring poets face.

Read! Yes, reading gives you ideas for poems, new words are to be discovered every time you read someone else's works. Reading fuels imagination.

Well these are my two cents for this journal posting. I will deal with more tips for enjoyable writing, and creating poetry that hopefully withstands the tests of time.

P.S. i have typos on purpose! XD It's the non-conformist in me lashing out :giggle:

Soooooo...;) Life is odd lately. I gots me a new job awhile ago, making decent money. I also got me degree a couple months ago. Life is great right? Naw...So i start writing poetry again, i had quit there for awhile. poetry is odd, it makes me feel better to get things off my chest, but at same time it isnt the cure. its like tylenol for cancer...:/

and then i realize...i wish my poetry would get discovered perhaps? but then knowing how this world is, maybe i should be proactive and try to get some published?
